Burmese Wood Jambupati Buddha - $390

Filed under: Jambupati, Wood, Buddhas, Burmese, SE Asian Art and Antiques — Tomoko @ 1:10 am

Description: A nice example of the unusual Jambupati Buddha from the Shan state of upper Burma. Here in a radical departure from the usual renderings of the Buddha in the garb of a monk, the Enlightened one appears as a Burmese king with an elaborate openwork butterfly sided crown along with the jeweled bands of royalty. The unusual iconography of this figure has several explanations: one suggesting that the Buddha converted the angry King Jambupati by appearing as his equal. Devotional wear and a later, but still period, teak wood.

Year: ca. 1800 A.D.
